This is the first image of how one of the city's tallest buildings - a £25m, 226-bed hotel - will look.
The nine-storey Jurys Inn on the former Bridgegate BMW site will be 117ft tall - the same height as the nearby Catholic church of St Mary's.
As well as the hotel, the building will include 89 apartments, a bar and restaurant, a casino in the basement and parking for 65 cars.
Plans have been submitted to the council and could be considered early next month.
If permission is granted, building could start early next year and the hotel, the first phase of the scheme, completed by the Spring of 2009.
Suzanne Cannon, marketing manager for Jurys Inn, said: "We are delighted to be entering the Derby hotel market. Derby is a vibrant and exciting city where we feel there is a lot of opportunity.
"We hope to play a valuable part in the city's regeneration and look forward to recruiting people from Derby in the run up to the hotel opening."
The site was bought by Northern Ireland developer McAleer and Rushe Group early last year.
A spokeswoman for the company said the building had been designed to tastefully fill a gap in the city's skyline.
"The proposed mixed-use development attempts to address the importance of this site, to create a gateway and add to the skyline of the city centre and present a scale and massing that is appropriate, on the one hand, to the scale of the ring road and riverside and, on the other hand, to the scale of the city centre," she said.
"The primary landmarks of the cathedral and church towers give Derby a unique recognisable character.
"The churches mark the start and finish of the conservation areas but, up to now, the space between has contributed nothing to the image of the city.
"The proposed buildings strengthen the sweep of the skyline from the east and the west and fill the empty space between the axis of the church towers and the river from the north and south."
John Cadwallader of urban regeneration company Derby Cityscape said that he thought the design was appropriate, given the restrictions of the site and was pleased it did not block the view of key city buildings .
"This site has stood barren for many years which is indicated from the maturity of the scrub area," he said.
"The new hotel will be a great addition to the amenities in this part of the city and will bring an active and vibrant use to the Cathedral Quarter creating many more jobs in the city centre."
Derby City Council leader Chris Williamson said: "I think the building looks aesthetically pleasing. It is a modern building at the end of the Cathedral Quarter and it is exactly what the city needs.
"That piece of land has been an eyesore for many years now and it is really great news to see that it is to be redeveloped with a quality hotel."
Jurys is one of several new hotels opening in the city.
Holiday Inn and Hilton's Hampton brand will form part of the Riverlights scheme, Ramada wants to build a 112-bedroom hotel at Pride Park, a 165-bedroom hotel is planned as part of the £20m development at Pride Park Stadium, a 200-bedroom hotel is planned in the North Riverlights scheme for Exeter Street and Darwin Place and a 50-bedroom hotel is scheduled at the Grade 1 listed St Helens' House, also in King Street.
