A NEW green area is to be included in Derby city centre's revamp – following public demand.

Part of the Council House car park next to the River Derwent will be opened up in the overhaul of key areas.

The move follows feedback from exhibitions of the original plans earlier this year. The re-drafted proposals will go on show to the public tomorrow.

It was announced in February that areas such as the Riverside car park at Cockpit, and Morledge, Corporation Street, Full Street and part of Heritage Walk were in line for a makeover.

The public were invited to comment on plans which included taking out the two roundabouts in Corporation Street and designs for a glazed area and orangery at the memorial gardens.

Now, plans to transform the existing council house car park, in Corporation Street, into an open space for the public with direct access to the River Derwent are included.

A scheme to develop the car park on the corner of Amen Alley and Full Street into a housing area with open space and specialist shops has also been put forward.

Urban regeneration company Derby Cityscape, Derby City Council, design consultants Savills Urban Design and Alan Baxter Associates are collaborating on the project.

Cityscape's urban design manager, Nick Corbett, said: “Opening up the River Derwent for everyone to enjoy was something that many local people told us they wanted at the original public consultation.

“The proposals will, therefore, show how better links can be created for pedestrians between the shopping streets and the river.

“We want to make the most of Derby's unique character and we want the city to punch above its weight.”

Among other proposals for the route between Westfield Derby, Riverlights and the Cathedral Quarter are the relocation of the Korean War memorial to Osnabruck Square and the building of an orangery. Funding would come from the city council and Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership. Work on the two-year project is due to start in early 2009.

Tomorrow's exhibition will be held at the Guildhall, Market Place, from 12.30pm to 7pm.
