STUDENTS PLAN THEIR GREEN ACTIVITIES

Students from West Park School in Spondon will be putting their creative and IT skills to the test next week and thinking of ideas to create their perfect café.

The 13 and 14-year-old pupils will be working alongside members of the project team from Derby Cityscape and Derby City Council in turning a struggling café business into a thriving destination. The project team will help them envisage their new business around what they think would appeal to communities from the city. One of the suggested areas they could locate the café on is the Cathedral Green which is currently going through its own transformation.

Derby Cityscape John Cadwallader explained: “We have already worked very successfully with pupils from West Park on what features they would like to see in the North Riverside area and were delighted when we were asked by the school to work with them on another creative project.”

Leader of Derby City Council Chris Williamson adds: “The work that we are doing to regenerate Derby city centre is for future generations and it is therefore vital that we gain the views, and no doubt some inspiration, from young people in the city.”

Landscaping work is well underway on the £3.8m improvement scheme at Cathedral Green which will include bio-diverse riverbank planting to encourage wildlife, an amphitheatre seating area, public art and an iconic swing design footbridge.

The improvement project is part of Derby Cityscape’s Public Realm Strategy for the city. Funding for the £3.8 million project comes from Derby City Council, Department for Communities and Local Government and Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership.
