Evening visitors to Derby’s Cathedral Quarter will get the chance to try their hand at urban art at a refurbished venue opening this weekend.

The Slug and Lettuce in Irongate, which re-branded and refurbished the  former Casa Bar last year, is re-opening the downstairs area of the venue commonly known as the Vaults this weekend.

Launch weekend attractions include a band night on Friday (May 2) and then a unique ‘Subism’ (urban artform) evening on Saturday (May 3) when customers can watch urban artists at work and even create their own artwork – entertained by a team of DJs playing ‘chill out’ music.

Lucy Taylor from the Slug and Lettuce explained: “The Vaults have not been open since we took over the venue last year but, with business going well here, we have decided to reopen downstairs now plan to organise a host of themed nights and events with a difference – particularly giving a platform to bands where we think there is a particular gap in the market.

“The Vaults will also be available from Sunday to Thursday for groups or individuals to hire out free of charge depending on the event.  We have a capacity for 100 people so we feel that this will be a useful venue for all kinds of events from meetings to speed dating!”

Martin Langsdale, Chair of the Derby Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District Management Steering Group, added: “The foresight of Slug and Lettuce to re-open the Vaults will give people yet another reason to enjoy a night out in the Cathedral Quarter and will provide a much-needed venue for all sorts of events during the week.

“The Cathedral Quarter is successfully raising its profile as a unique, diverse and niche destination and this additional attraction definitely contributes to our collective brand.”
